High school students enter this program by taking the PSAT test (National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test) in 11th grade normally in October. Approximately 1.3 million students take this test every year. The NMSC places the highest-scoring 50,000 students out of more than 1.3 million students who took PSAT test. These highest-scoring students have a score of at least 200 out of maximum possible 240. Students at CPSA take PSAT exams from junior high school, but only the score obtained in 11th grade is counted.
